Dear WUSD Stakeholder:

As many of you know, in September of 2024, Governor Newsom signed into law, AB 3216, also known as the Phone-Free Schools Act. This law goes into effect July 1, 2026, and requires all California school districts to establish policies that limit or prohibit student cell phone use during school hours. While the state mandates districts create these policies, the specific rules and enforcement methods will vary by district, with many adopting restrictions to improve student focus, reduce social media distractions, and promote mental well-being and social interaction.

Students who have a documented need for a cell phone as part of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), a Section 504 Plan, or for verified medical purposes are exempt from the new restrictions. In these cases, cell phone use will follow the accommodations and conditions specified in the student’s IEP or 504 Plan.
 

We here in WUSD are working this year to craft our individual policy, and we are reaching out to let you know we want, and need, you to be a part of this process, in order to ensure any policy is equitable and enforceable.

We have previously reached out with a general poll and had two town hall meetings with all stakeholders. We are returning today with a poll more focused on specific policies. We will be having one additional town hall in the future to discuss these policies. 
 

Below you will find links to the specific surveys (under 10 minutes to take) which we will be using to gather data as to the thoughts and concerns about specific policies. We hope to hear from all parts of our greater WUSD community, including staff, parents, students and any other stakeholders.
